The Thing About Facebook

I know this isn't new news, but seriously, WHY DO YOUR CO-WORKERS FEEL THE NEED TO SEND YOU FACEBOOK FRIEND REQUESTS?????

I've been at my new job for THREE weeks and I knew it was only a matter of time before I received their friend requests. I literally scrubbed my page, just to make sure I was comfortable letting them "be my friend".

During the week, after I accepted their requests, I realized that my Twitter handle was posted on my FB page, and that my Twitter page links to my blog. God help me. I only hope they were too busy snooping at my personal pictures on FB and didn't check out my Twitter page. In fact, the next morning, one of the two girls I work closely with was like, "Missy, I saw your wedding pictures last night!!! Squeal!!" Jeez-us.

Last Friday, as I sat at my desk, dying for the weekend to come {yes, it's happened already, I'm a corporate world hater}, I wanted to go on Facebook and bitch about stuff. But I couldn't. WHY? Because the people I work with would see my comments. And therein lies the rub.

I could have declined their requests, right? But do I need weirdness at work if I don't accept? No. Am I aggravated that I feel like there's no way around this issue? YES!

Tell me, blogging buddies. How would you handle this situation?

I do the old , "I don't go on FB much, but when I do I'll accept your request!" :)

Ugh, I just went through a big "deleting of friends" party because I was sick of people knowing my business who I never talked to in real life! I would defriend your co-workers and then make it so people can't see your profile picture when searching for you. If your colleagues ask, tell them you deleted your profile. Unless there is only one person with your name on FB (which is doubtful), they won't know ;)

I never friend anyone that I work with. It is a blanket policy, so people don't get offended. I link with them on LinkedIn. After I leave a job if I really like someone, I will friend them on Facebook. If there is someone that you become BFF with on FB from work, I *might* friend them on FB, but on the down-low and with their understanding that they should not spread the word.

I feel your pain Missy. I have a love/hate relationship with Facebook. I only really want about half the friends I have and it's not because I don't like them, it's just that I also link to my blog/Twitter and I don't necessarily want all my friends having access to them (only because I swear and write about drinking and stuff). I was just friended by the organist at the church I grew up in. No!!!!!!! Her son is my friend and I'm assuming she saw me and thought it would be nice to add me as well. I could have ignored it but I really like her son and didn't want to appear mean.

I feel for you Missy, I really do. I like your idea for an undercover, anonymous Facebook type social networking site. You should start that up! You'd make millions......
